Central Falls High School

Central Falls, RI

In Rhode Island’s smallest and most densely populated city, the new Central Falls High School transforms the community’s last remaining vacant parcel into a bold new center for learning, innovation, and civic life. Prominently positioned at the intersection of Lonsdale Avenue and Higginson Avenue, the 123,844-square-foot school establishes a new architectural landmark and a visible investment in the future of Central Falls.

Designed for a diverse population of students in grades 9–12, the school brings rigorous academics together with career technical education programs in Environmental Engineering, Law and Advocacy, and Engineering and Robotics. These programs are woven throughout a compact, four-story academic core that supports collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and meaningful connections between students, educators, and the broader community.

The constrained urban site became a catalyst for an innovative planning strategy. Large-volume program spaces, including the gymnasium and auditorium, are vertically organized and strategically stacked to reduce the building footprint and preserve as much of the site as possible for outdoor use. The resulting design creates valuable green space for community activities, recreation, and outdoor classrooms while maximizing the potential of one of the city’s most limited resources—open land.

The building’s orientation and massing are carefully calibrated to optimize daylight and solar exposure within the academic environments, creating bright, welcoming learning spaces while improving overall building performance. A highly efficient exterior envelope, enhanced insulation, and high-performance all-electric mechanical systems significantly reduce energy demand and position the school to achieve net-zero-ready performance.

More than a response to a challenging urban site, Central Falls High School demonstrates how thoughtful design can amplify opportunity. By balancing density with openness, academic innovation with community access, and architectural identity with high-performance design, the school creates a forward-looking educational environment that reflects the resilience, diversity, and aspirations of Central Falls.
