Cumberland breaks ground for their new elementary school

September 2025

On Wednesday, September 10th, the Cumberland community came together to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new B.F. Norton Elementary School — the town’s first new school in over 50 years!

The ceremony featured remarks from the Governor, Mayor, Superintendent, School Board Chair, Commissioner of Elementary & Secondary Education, and the School Principal, along with a heartfelt poem shared by a current B.F. Norton student.

Designed to serve 575 students, the new school will include innovative collaborative learning environments and spaces that celebrate the school’s diversity and strong STEM programs.

Since the ceremony, construction has advanced rapidly, with foundations being installed this fall and steel erection planned for the winter. The ambitious schedule aims to deliver an efficient, cost-effective building ready for students by Summer 2027.

Ai3 is proud to continue its collaboration with the Town of Cumberland, Cumberland School District, RIDE, Colliers (OPM), and Consigli Construction (CM) to bring this exciting project to life for the students, educators, and community of Cumberland, Rhode Island.
