The new Plymouth South High School is a comprehensive high school that offers the integration and collaboration of academic and vocational learning. Plymouth South is currently recognized nationally as a model for how integration and collaboration between academic and vocational learning can be achieved. Integration and collaboration among teachers and students are key components in the success of PSHS. Students learn the application of academic study within real-world trade, design, and engineering problems and challenges.

The location and adjacency of clusters and classrooms are key components of the building design. All of the academic classrooms are placed directly adjacent to vocational application labs, either horizontally or vertically. The school contains a Hospitality and Tourism Cluster, Transportation & Construction Cluster, Business and Consumer Services Cluster, and standalone programs such as Cosmetology, Computer Aided Design, Early Education & Care, Graphic Design & Visual Communication, and Electrical. All of these spaces are located in close proximity to teacher collaboration and planning areas, seminar rooms, and academic classrooms which promotes communication and interdisciplinary interaction.

The design solution protects the integrity of architectural style in the surrounding Town through the use of compatible materials, retention of human scale in building mass, and careful attention to building location to preserve interaction with surrounding green space. Due to the school’s length, the main entry is visually and architecturally designed as a prominent element so it becomes a focal point along the length of the main entry drive. The building’s mass is increased at the main entry and the roof line is raised to provide visual importance and to create a focal point. The building material at the main entry transitions from brick veneer to fiberglass so that the material and color change also highlights the main entry.

The interior design reflects a progressive and modern educational facility that showcases the district’s comprehensive program.

The new building is designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating and includes many green design strategies such as an energy efficient building envelope, high performance windows, rainwater collection system, high efficiency mechanical and lighting systems, optimum acoustics within instructional classrooms, and low-flow toilet fixtures, among many others.
