Nathan Bishop Middle School is the first NE-CHPS "Historic" green school renovation in Rhode Island. The project has received numerous educational and historic awards, with specific accolades for the salvation of a historically significant icon and its conversion into a 21st Century educational facility that includes numerous sustainable and green design strategies. The historic 1929 elementary/middle school building had previously been closed by the City of Providence due to its poor physical condition and inability to provide a 21st Century educational environment. The final design solution was formulated in collaboration with the City, School Department, Community, and the Providence Preservation Society. It includes expanded community access and community use, expanded performing arts opportunities, modernized Library/Media facilities, integration of 21st Century technology resources, creation of specialized instructional classrooms, and conversion of existing outdated classrooms into modern educational laboratories.
